One variable

A linear equation of one variable has the form

\begin{equation*} y = ax + b \end{equation*}
where \(a \neq 0\) is the slope
  \(b\) is the \(y\)-intercept,

and its solution is

\begin{equation*} x = -\frac{b}{a}. \end{equation*}
