To define and reference a footnote, type [fn:NAME] as in

† With a footnote at point, the command behaves just like C-c C-c. To see
the available actions, which enables deleting the footnote, for example, call
the command with the universal prefix C-u.
Place footnotes at the end of the current section instead of the special “Footnotes” section at the end of the document.
